Why Melania Trump’s RNC Speech Doesn’t Humanize the Trump Presidency

She is a beacon of its hypocrisy.

Melania Trump walked to the Rose Garden podium that she desecrated like a fashion model walking the catwalk. Still a model who knows how to work it, her speech at the Republican National Convention, this time not pinched from Michelle Obama, was pleasing to the ear. Like most of the Trump presidency, it was smoke and mirrors with a lot of gaslighting thrown in.

FLOTUS on the pandemic

She addressed the tragedy of this pandemic that her husband and his administration helped to exacerbate by taking no leadership role. When asked about the death toll, her husband said, “It is what it is.”

His comment contradicts the First Lady’s assertion that Trump “will not rest until he has done all he can.” He has no national testing strategy or contact tracing plan. He has negated testing and downplayed this pandemic from day one. What exactly has he done?

While talking about COVID-19, she stood in the center of a gathering where no social distancing was taking place. Rows and rows of people had no masks on. Only the people in the same row as the president were tested. She expressed so much care and concern for the whole country while the White House could care less about the people in attendance.

FLOTUS on immigration

Aligned with the theme of “Land of Opportunity,” she highlighted her immigrant experience. She’s not from one of the “shithole” countries her husband has complained about, so the conservatives in attendance nodded at her in approval.

It’s such an important part of her history. Yet, she’s done nothing to help immigrants as First Lady, staying silent as her husband’s administration passed laws curbing immigration.

When this White House has gone after brown immigrants with a vengeance, from building the wall to filling detention centers with people legally seeking asylum, she didn’t care. She showed she didn’t care when she wore a jacket that said, “I really don’t care, do u?” to visit children put in cages.
